Binoculars

Together with the optical design, the glass materials determine how much light binoculars transmit and how accurately they reproduce colours, contrast and fine detail. Different uses do not necessarily call for the same glass configuration.

CT glass for especially bright binoculars

Selected night and twilight binoculars prioritise maximum light transmission. Rather than necessarily using a more complex ED design, DDoptics uses high-quality optical glass that we call CT glass. The matching optical design requires one fewer lens element. Fewer glass-to-air surfaces mean fewer potential light losses. At the same time, this CT glass keeps colour fringing and chromatic aberrations low enough that the absence of ED glass is barely noticeable in practical observation.

ED glass and ED optics

ED stands for “Extra-low Dispersion”, meaning particularly low colour dispersion. In a suitably designed objective, ED glass helps focus different wavelengths more closely onto a common image plane. This reduces colour fringes along high-contrast edges and makes fine detail clearer. ED glass types are supplied by manufacturers in Japan and China, among others. Actual performance depends not simply on origin or name, but on the specific glass type, manufacturing quality, optical design and coatings.

FLK stands for fluorine crown glass. This high-quality Japanese speciality glass has particularly low dispersion and is used by DDoptics in an ED apochromatic objective system. Working with the other lenses, it helps bring different wavelengths into precise focus, supporting high resolution, natural colours and crisp detail.

High resolution: designed, manufactured and measured

Resolution describes how finely two closely spaced structures can still be distinguished as separate. During development, DDoptics calculates the light path for different wavelengths and image heights. This assesses the size of the image formed by an ideal point, the extent of spherical aberration, astigmatism and chromatic aberrations, and how consistently performance is maintained from the centre to the edge of the field.

Diffraction sets a physical limit. In simplified form, theoretical angular resolution can be estimated using θ ≈ 1.22 × λ ÷ D : λ is the wavelength of light and D is the clear objective diameter. A larger objective can theoretically resolve smaller angles. In real binoculars, however, this potential is only realised when the objectives, prisms and eyepieces work together precisely.

Resolution can be measured with a fine line or resolution chart at a known distance, or with a collimator that simulates a distant target. The key is the smallest line pattern whose individual structures remain clearly distinguishable. The resolved angle can be calculated from the pattern size and test distance; the smaller the angle, the higher the resolution. Both barrels are also checked for equal performance and precise mutual alignment.

High resolution is therefore no accident. It requires sophisticated optical design, suitable glass types, accurately ground and polished surfaces, tight centring and spacing tolerances, precise prisms, carefully applied coatings and exact final alignment. Contrast and low stray light also matter if the detail the optics can resolve is to be visible to the eye. Tighter tolerances, additional testing and stricter quality selection increase manufacturing effort and cost – but deliver the visibly finer, steadier and more detailed image of high-quality binoculars.

Prisms turn the image formed inside binoculars the right way up. Their design affects the length and shape of the body, light efficiency, manufacturing complexity and the coatings needed for a high-quality image.

Schmidt-Pechan prisms: compact but demanding

This very compact roof-prism system is mainly used in small, slim and easy-to-carry binoculars. Its size is a major advantage, but a high-quality implementation is demanding: the roof edge requires precise phase correction, while one surface also needs a high-performance mirror coating. Accurate manufacturing, phase coating and a high-quality dielectric mirror are essential to turn this small system, inherently more prone to light losses, into a high-performance prism. The effort pays off wherever excellent image quality is needed in particularly compact binoculars.

Abbe-König prisms: bright but longer

Abbe-König is also a roof-prism system. Its light path uses total internal reflection very efficiently, so it needs no additional reflective mirror coating. Phase correction at the roof edge is still useful for high contrast and fine detail. The simpler, low-loss light path is particularly suited to bright binoculars. The drawback is its form: the longer image-erecting path generally makes binoculars longer, larger and often slightly heavier than comparable Schmidt-Pechan models.

Porro prisms: high brightness with less complexity

Porro prisms have no roof edge, so they need neither phase correction nor a reflective mirror coating. Their entrance and exit surfaces can, of course, still receive anti-reflection coatings. The system is relatively simple and economical to manufacture, yet total internal reflection provides excellent light efficiency and a pronounced sense of depth. Its design drawback is the characteristic offset Porro shape: these binoculars are wider, often look bulkier and are generally larger and heavier.

Field flatteners and a natural view

A field flattener reduces natural field curvature. Without this correction, the centre may look sharp while edge detail falls outside the same plane of focus. The correction keeps the image focused as far towards the edge as possible. Straight lines and barrel or pincushion distortion, by contrast, depend on the distortion correction of the entire optical system. Both corrections must be carefully balanced: a very flat image strongly corrected for geometric straightness can appear to “roll” unnaturally when panning. This globe effect can cause discomfort, headaches or dizziness in sensitive viewers. A good design therefore combines sharp edges and low distortion with a steady, natural view when scanning.

Coatings are functional layers just a few nanometres thick on optical glass surfaces. Depending on their purpose, they increase light transmission, correct phase shifts, improve reflection within prisms or protect outer lenses from water and dirt.

How optical coatings are made

Glass surfaces are meticulously cleaned and then coated in a vacuum chamber. Suitable materials – often various metal oxides or fluoride compounds – are evaporated or deposited under controlled vacuum conditions. This creates extremely uniform layers of precisely calculated thickness. Modern high-performance coatings may contain several dozen layers, with particularly complex systems sometimes exceeding 60 individual layers.

The layers do not each work independently for just one colour. The material, sequence and thickness of the entire stack are calculated so that interference cancels unwanted reflections as effectively as possible, while useful light is transmitted or reflected efficiently over a broad wavelength range. This allows precise control of air-to-glass interfaces and the way light travels through a prism.

Phase coatings on roof prisms

At the roof edge of a Schmidt-Pechan or Abbe-König prism, different polarisation components undergo slightly different phase shifts. Without correction, they no longer recombine fully in phase. Fine outlines lose clarity, contrast falls and the smallest details may look softer.

A precisely calculated phase coating compensates for these shifts across as much of the visible spectrum as possible. This improves resolution, edge definition and contrast. An even spectral response also prevents certain colour ranges from being favoured or weakened. Colours look clearer, more differentiated and more natural; the whole image appears steadier, more three-dimensional and closer to the real view.

Dielectric mirror

In a Schmidt-Pechan system, one prism surface cannot redirect light entirely through total internal reflection. A dielectric mirror provides reflection there. Its stack of precisely matched layers achieves very high reflectivity across the visible spectrum, reducing brightness losses and supporting neutral colour reproduction.

Nano coating: easier cleaning, not an invisible wiper

The dirt- and water-repellent nano coating is applied to the outer lens surfaces. It lowers the surface energy of the glass, so water and oily deposits adhere less strongly. Dust, fingerprints and dried residue can then be removed more easily and with less rubbing.

Its effect is often overestimated, however. A nano coating does not stop raindrops from remaining on an objective lens. Depending on droplet size, lens angle and coating, reliably blowing drops off a small, almost vertical binocular lens would require very strong airflow – illustratively, around 60 km/h. Nobody moves through the woods that fast while observing. In ordinary rain, the lens can therefore still become wet and retain visible droplets despite its nano coating.

Nor is a nano coating an anti-fog coating. If the outer glass remains cold and meets warm, humid air, condensation can still form on the outside. Nitrogen filling protects the internal glass surfaces from fogging; it does not prevent external condensation.

The practical benefit is especially clear when cleaning: gently rinsing the lens with clean water allows it to bead and run off more readily, carrying loose dirt with it. Less water and dirt remain on the surface. Nano coatings therefore make cleaning and care considerably easier – but do not automatically keep binoculars free of raindrops or guarantee a permanently clear view.

The body is the precise supporting structure of binoculars. It holds objectives, prisms, focusing components and eyepieces in their designed positions. Material, wall thickness and manufacturing accuracy therefore affect not only weight and durability, but also adjustability, repeatability and long-term optical stability.

Die-cast magnesium: light, thin-walled and precise

Magnesium has a very low density and can be die-cast into complex, relatively thin-walled bodies. A carefully designed magnesium body can therefore be as light as, or in some designs even lighter than, a polycarbonate body while providing high structural stability. Precisely made bearing seats and mounts hold the optical assemblies consistently in position. This supports accurate focusing, alignment and repeatable production – a key reason DDoptics favours magnesium for high-quality binoculars where the smallest details count.

The material and die-casting process are, however, more demanding and expensive. Magnesium also needs reliable corrosion protection and proper surface treatment. With the right design, the result is a very light, strong and precise body for premium optics.

High-strength aluminium alloy: rigid and durable

Binocular bodies use high-strength aluminium alloy rather than soft, pure aluminium, following principles familiar from aircraft materials. Alloying elements and heat treatment provide much greater strength and dimensional stability. Aluminium is stiffer than magnesium, can be machined very precisely, offers good corrosion resistance and provides a durable support for optical components.

For the same volume, aluminium is considerably heavier than magnesium. Intelligent design can offset some of this through thinner sections, but die-cast magnesium often offers a better balance of low weight and complex shape for especially light premium bodies. Aluminium, in turn, offers high stiffness, good machinability and everyday durability. Both metals allow very precise optical housings; the better choice depends on body shape, target weight and manufacturing process.

Polycarbonate: light, impact-resistant and economical

Polycarbonate is a light, corrosion-free, impact-resistant engineering plastic. At higher production volumes, injection-moulded bodies can be made much more economically than complex metal housings. The material feels less unpleasant in cold conditions, absorbs impacts well and is well suited to lightweight, affordable binoculars for everyday use and travel.

Compared with metal, polycarbonate is more flexible, less stiff and expands more with temperature changes. Under sustained loads, plastic is also more prone to gradual creep. This does not mean that the optics in well-designed polycarbonate binoculars will automatically shift. Ribs, suitable wall thicknesses, precise moulds and, where needed, metal inserts can keep assemblies reliably stable. For maximum precision with very thin walls and exceptionally tight tolerances maintained over time, however, magnesium and aluminium offer design advantages.

Best-Grip armour: secure handling in cold and wet conditions

Rubber armour protects the body and prevents uncomfortable direct contact with cold metal. Best-Grip armour uses raised textures, ridges and grip zones designed to give fingers a secure hold even in rain. Water can move from pressure points into the recessed spaces and drain away more easily. The raised peaks remain easier to grip, increase effective friction and help keep wet binoculars from becoming slippery in the hand.

Quickly replaceable metal eyecups

Eyecups are moving mechanical parts subject to wear. Sand, dust and repeated twisting can strain their guides over many years. On models marked accordingly, DDoptics uses robust metal eyecups that can be replaced when worn.

With the quick-change design, no extensive dismantling is needed. A firm but controlled twisting force releases the eyecup from its threaded seat so it can be unscrewed. Accidentally unscrewing it is not damage: screw it back in straight and tighten it carefully by hand at the stop. Removable eyecups not only simplify later repairs; they also provide better access to the eyepiece rim and hard-to-reach areas for more thorough cleaning.

Good optics should be quick and intuitive to use outdoors. The symbols therefore also identify handling concepts, weight and available sizes.

Wide model choice and four size classes

A series offers several magnifications or objective diameters. This lets you match your binoculars to the reach, field of view, twilight performance and weight you need.

Exact specifications vary by series. The feature strip therefore identifies the relevant model’s features and, where applicable, its tested waterproof rating.

Waterproofing through a coordinated sealing system

Waterproofing depends on a coordinated system, not a single seal. Body joints, objectives, eyepieces, focusing shafts and other openings are protected against water ingress by accurately fitted O-rings, sealing surfaces and suitable sealants. Moving components are especially demanding: they must remain smooth and precise to operate while their openings stay reliably sealed.

After assembly, watertightness is checked at the test depth and for the duration specified for each series. This is why different series list values such as 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 5 metres. These figures are more specific than the general word “waterproof” and indicate the test conditions for which the binoculars were designed.

Dry nitrogen filling to prevent internal fogging

Before sealing, the normal moisture-containing air inside the binoculars is displaced with dry nitrogen. This introduces virtually no humidity into the optical system, leaving very little water vapour to condense on internal glass surfaces when temperatures change. Properly sealed and correctly filled binoculars are therefore almost entirely fog-free inside.

Nitrogen filling cannot, however, prevent a cold outer lens from fogging in warm, humid surroundings. This external fogging is normal condensation and clears once the glass surface reaches the ambient temperature.

Rangefinding and angle measurement

An integrated laser measures the distance to the target. Models with angle measurement can also account for inclination to provide useful field readings.

Ranging reticle

A scale visible in the field of view helps estimate distances or dimensions when reference measurements are known.
